SILK SCARF GIGLIO ROSSOThe red lily grows wild on Italian hillsides, flowering at midsummer on the feast of San Giovanni the 24th of June, when bonfires are lit across Tuscany to mark the solstice. It is a symbol of purification, abundance and the arrival of summer. In Florence, it carries a second story: in 1251, when the Guelphs took control of the city and exiled their rivals, they inverted the colours of the Florentine emblem white lily to red, red ground to white.
